![]() Heating-Oil Users Can Brace For Expensive Winter By ANA CAMPOY August 21, 2008; Page A3 Heating-oil prices have dropped to their lowest levels in months, but there are signs that tight supplies could keep winter heating bills high even if crude prices continue to tumble. Government data released Wednesday showed the nation's heating-oil supplies are down 9.8% compared with this time last year. In New England, where many houses are warmed with heating oil during the winter, the fall in inventories has reached 49%. The price of crude-oil futures on Wednesday edged up 0.4%, to $114.98 a barrel. But the price of heating oil for September delivery jumped 1.3%, or 3.98 cents a gallon, to close to $3.1635 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, pointing to higher prices ahead...... Consumers are bracing for higher prices. The approximately eight million households that use heating oil should expect to pay an average $4.34 a gallon, or $2,644 for the heating season, up more than 30% from $3.31 a gallon, or $1,939, over last winter, according to estimates by the Department of Energy. |
